The profession of the florist, more specifically the art of flower arranging is regarded as one of the oldest professions in existence. The earliest known evidence of the florist dates as far back as 2500 BC in ancient Egypt where ornately stylish floral arrangements were used in everyday displays and more elaborately in burial ceremonies for pharaohs and other highly regarded individuals.

Florists selected their flowers based on their significance/religious symbolism. Many flowers have been found in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, along with the garlands worn by loved ones, though the most common flower is the lotus flower, believed to be of great importance to Isis, though other flowers included delphinium, narcissus, anemones and roses.

The ancient Greeks and Romans also used flowers for ceremonial purposes and due to their beauty and fragrance, flowers quickly became a symbol of status and wealth. The Roman florists showered their dinner parties with roses from the ceilings and covered the floors of rooms with flowers, filling the room with fragrance.

The art of flower arranging arrived in Europe around 1000 BC, and the popularity of the work of the florist grew rapidly as crusaders returned from the Middle East with new and exciting varieties of flowers.

While the styles of the work florists carried out changed massively in the years following the introduction to Europe, the popularity of flowers grew and grew. The study of the language of flowers became a popular pastime and the understanding of what individual flowers meant and why tied in with Greek mythology.

Over the years with the growth in popularity for occasions such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, sending flowers has become the essential gift, though not limited only to national celebrations. Perfect for birthdays, get well, thank you and just because, the work of the florist is now a well-known and well-loved part of everyday life.

In recent years, the way that people shop has changed dramatically however. As more and more people shop online, it’s no longer necessary to go to a local florist to send flowers. Now you can make a flower order from the comfort of your own home. An online florist in the area you are sending to will take your order, create the bouquet or arrangement of your choosing and then deliver it on your behalf.

The high street florist has needed to become an online florist shop in order to enable the ancient art to continue to grow and prosper.

If you decide to search for an online florist out network of high street florists are avaialble to receive your flower order and fulfill it just as they would if you were to walk in to their shop.
